Is J-Net an agency?
No. It's a network of translators and interpreters. Many of us work as freelancers, as in-house translators or interpreters or for translation agencies. We set our own rates and terms and conditions for the services we provide but we are all guided by The Institute of Translation and Interpreting's Code of Conduct. We sometimes collaborate with each other on large projects but we work independently. There are currently about 140 members of J-Net in the categories of Friend, Associate Member of ITI and Member of ITI. We are the largest network of Japanese language specialist in Europe.

Must I be a member of ITI to join J-Net?
No. You can join us in the category of Friend of J-Net. About half of our members are in this category. As a Friend, you may join our mailing list and have your name on our Search page.

Can I join J-Net to find work?
You can, but it really shouldn't be the reason you join us. There is never any guarantee you'll find work anyway. It's best to join us because you have a professional interest in translation and interpreting between Japanese and English.

I have a Japanese translation or interpreting job to be done, can J-Net help?
Yes, we can. You can contact us here by e-mail with details of the project and it can then be posted on our mailing list. Any of our members who are interested in the particular project will contact you directly to discuss it. Alternatively, you can search our list of translators and interpreters on our Search page to find the help you need or you can fill in our Job Posting form.

How is the cost of a translation estimated?
Translators working from Japanese to English count the number of Japanese characters in a text and usually charge by the thousand characters. This is unlike European languages and is largely because there are no spaces between words in Japanese text. Other charges may apply for complex text, tables and drawings. Translations from English to Japanese are usually charged by the number of words in the source text.
   Interpreters usually charge by the hour, half day or day depending on the assignment. Some translators and interpreters have minimum payments and interpreters may charge for transportation and other expenses.

What about spelling differences between British and American English?
There are many differences between spellings between British and American English. When you request a translation to be done, tell the translator which type of spelling you want before he or she starts the project.

Perhaps my document is too technical for ordinary translators?
It is unlikely that your translation is too technical. Most J-Net translators have university-level education in their specialist fields in some cases up to Ph.D. level. They have also been working in their fields for many years and well aware of the latest changes, trends and technological advances.

What kinds of interpreting do J-Net members do?
J-Net interpreters can offer services as consecutive and simultaneous interpreters and can also offer whispering, liason and conference interpreting. At present, over half the J-Net members are interpreters and translators with only a handful dealing with interpreting only.

What other language-related skills do your members have?

仕事を見つけるためにＪネットに入会してもいいですか？
いいですが、それが理由でＪネットに入るべきではありません。というのは、仕事が見つかるという保証がないからです。本当は、日本語と英語の翻訳や通訳に職業上の関心があるから入会するのが理想です。

翻訳代はどのようにして決まるのですか？
日 本語から英語への翻訳の場合、日本語文章の文字数、通常1000文字の単位で計算されます。ヨーロッパ言語とは異なり、日本語には文字間にスペースがない ためです。複雑なテキスト、表や図面の翻訳がある場合、料金が加算されることもあります。英語から日本語への翻訳の場合、料金は通常単語数によって決まり ます。
通訳者はその仕事内容により、時間、半日または一日単位で計算されます。翻訳者・通訳者の中には最低料金を設定している人もいますし、交通費や諸経費を支払いの対象に含める通訳者もいます。

イギリス英語とアメリカ英語のスペリングの違いはどうしていますか？
イギリス英語とアメリカ英語にはかなり多くのスペリングの違いがあります。翻訳を依頼する際、プロジェクト開始に先立ち、担当翻訳者にどのタイプのスペリングを必要としているのかを伝えておくといいでしょう。

お願いする書類の内容が普通の翻訳者には専門すぎる場合はどうしますか？
書 類の内容が専門すぎることはないと思います。ほとんどのＪネット翻訳者はその専門分野において大卒レベルの教育を受けているからです。中には博士号を取得 している人もいます。また、何年もそれら専門分野で従事してきており、最新の変化、動向及び技術進歩についても認識しています。

Ｊネットメンバーはどのような通訳を携わりますか？
Ｊネット通訳者は逐次及び同時通訳のサービスを提供することができます。また、小声や会議通訳も提供できます。現在、Ｊネットメンバーの半数以上が通訳と翻訳を行い、少数のみが通訳だけを請け負います。

Ｊネットメンバーは他にどのような言語関係のサービスを提供していますか？
